Violent Femmes formed in 1981 as an acoustic punk band playing on the streets of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their main influences at that time were Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps and The Velvet Underground. Their goal was to rock harder than any other acoustic act on the planet.

After being rejected for an audition by a local nightclub, the Femmes set up outside a Pretenders gig and began to play. Pretenders’ lead singer Chrissie Hynde asked them to open that night’s show, which gave the young band a publicity boost and caught the attention of Richard Hell, who invited the Femmes to open for him in NYC. A rave review in the New York Times eventually led to a record deal, which in turn spawned worldwide touring.

She has garnered numerous accolades including three Tony Awards, a Golden Globe, four Emmy and four Grammy Award nominations and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Best known for her work on stage and one of Broadway’s most critically acclaimed performers, Bernadette just concluded a highly successful West End debut in the Cameron Mackintosh production of Old Friends, celebrating the life and work of Stephen Sondheim. It was recently announced the production will transfer to Broadway for the 2025 season.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Liz Phair’s beloved debut record, Exile In Guyville, which was first released on June 22, 1993 via Matador. 

An 18-track double album loosely framed as a song-by-song reply to The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St., Exile In Guyville was dubbed a classic upon arrival. The album’s profile has only risen in the ensuing years. It is now regarded as an iconic work and a feminist landmark, recently cracking the top ten of Pitchfork’s “Best 150 Albums of the 1990s” (#4) and the top 100 of Rolling Stone’s “Best 500 Albums of All Time” (#56).

This fall, Phair will celebrate the record by launching a full band US tour and performing Exile In Guyville in its entirety (along with some additional hits) at some of the largest venues of her career. Blondshell will open all dates.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the debut of Russian conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, music director of the Chicago Opera Theater, as she leads the ASO in the suite from Prokofiev’s ballet masterpiece Romeo and Juliet. A work that brings out the full range of this virtuoso ensemble, the music moves from bellicose furor to aching poignancy with some white-knuckle violin playing in between. The concert includes Gabriela Lena Frank’s stirring Elegía Andina, a piece that mixes strains of Peruvian folk song with contemporary sounds to highlight the composer’s multicultural heritage. The program opens with Amjad Ali Khan’s Samaagam, featuring Khan, master of the sarod, and his family of acclaimed artists from the Indian classical music tradition.



Folk Tales, Ragas and Lost Love

Nick Cave has announced a North American solo tour for fall. Performing songs from his extensive catalog, Cave will make a stop at the beautiful Atlanta Symphony Hall in Atlanta on a rare solo tour.  Cave will be accompanied by Colin Greenwood on bass guitar.

Nick Cave has been performing, writing and recording music for more than forty years. He is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. His body of work extends across a diverse range of creative disciplines - score composition, writing books, novels and film scripts, and more recently ceramic art. His website and weekly e-mail, The Red Hand Files, originally created for Cave to answer questions submitted by fans, has grown from a simple exercise in connectivity to a cultural phenomenon, now with over 150,000 subscribers, and hundreds of questions submitted each week.

The Breman Museum in conjunction with the Ballethnic Dance Company has commissioned a series of dances based on the works of the prominent artists featured in the Breman’s exhibition, A Jazz Memoir: The Photography of Herb Snitzer. The Alliance is excited to partner to present this performance for three nights on The Coca-Cola Stage.   

Jazzing: Memoirs in Jazz is inspired by the photo exhibition and discussions with Herb about his experience, particularly with Jazz artists and navigating through life with these musical geniuses during racial inequity and the Civil Rights Movement.

Parliament Funkadelic featuring George Clinton is coming to Atlanta Symphony Hall on August 8, 2023. George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic collective developed an influential and eclectic form of funk music in the 1970s. He and other members of Parliament Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2019, Parliament Funkadelic was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Little Feat is the classic example of a fusion of many styles and musical genres made into something utterly distinctive.  Their brilliant  musicianship transcends boundaries, uniting California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, rockabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie into a rich gumbo, that has been leading people in joyful dance ever since.

It began in 1969 when Frank Zappa was smart enough to fire Lowell George from the Mothers of Invention and tell him to go start a band of his own.  Soon after, Lowell connected with Bill Payne, which stirred up sparks.  They then found drummer Richie Hayward.
