What do Haydn and Beethoven have in common? First, and not surprisingly, they wrote great chamber music. Second, and quite unexpectedly, they wrote many superb settings of Scottish songs.

Get a taste of both as Anton Nel performs on fortepiano with La Follia and guest vocalists. What a satisfying way to end a concert season!

Formed in London in 1972, the band - somewhat incongruously given their Scottish roots - took the influences of their R&B heroes such as Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Stevie Wonder, and Jazz greats Cannonball Adderley and The Crusaders, then developed their own authentic sound rapidly adopted by black audiences in the US, UK and worldwide. The group's consistently accomplished song-writing helped them to achieve several Gold & Platinum-selling albums and multiple Grammy nominations with Atlantic Records.

DSO violinist Heidi Han always wanted to play “Death and the Maiden.” Schubert’s Quartet is a monumental piece reflecting emotions of fate. George Crumb’s Black Angels, composed for electric string quartet and subtitled “Thirteen Images from the Dark Land,” is similarly driven. Like Schubert’s momentous opus, Crumb hears powerful music in the irresistible pull of destiny.
