Join us for a delightful evening at the Portland Opera as we present Giuseppe Verdi's final masterpiece, "Falstaff." This fast-paced and rollicking comedy, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito, revolves around the witty yet scheming Sir John Falstaff. Vanity leads our knight to attempt to woo two wealthy married women for financial gain. However, his flimsy plan is quickly uncovered, and Alice Ford and Meg Page devise a scheme of their own to expose him. The opera is filled with merriment and mischief, culminating in Falstaff's ultimate humiliation and a heartwarming conclusion where love prevails.

This fall, Portland Opera" class="css-u850">Portland Opera will present a new 50-minute adaptation of Rossini's La Cenerentola for the 2023 Portland Opera to Go tour. This lively staging tells the story of Angelina (Cinderella) who longs for friendship and love and finds it in the most unexpected of places—a prince who is disguised as a servant. Her bumbling stepfather and her two self-centered stepsisters create havoc along the way, but love rules triumphant in this tale of kindness, friendship, and compassion. Full of whimsy, comedy, and delight, Cinderella is the perfect first opera for kids and adults alike.

The adventures of Figaro and Susanna unfold with wit and delight in this satire about nobility and power. Count Almaviva is determined to woo Susanna, who is engaged to Figaro—a servant in the household. The betrothed will do whatever it takes to navigate the Count’s advances; and the Countess—fed up with her husband’s infidelities—joins in the chaos, too. This empathetic comedy of twists and turns features sublime musical moments, a healthy dose of irreverence, and is a joyful reminder of our shared humanity.

The Marriage of Figaro

Thumbprint is inspired by the true story of Mukhtar Mai—a trailblazing Pakistani activist whose fight for justice and safety reminds us that women's rights are human rights. After surviving sexual violence perpetrated by a local tribal council in retribution for her brother's alleged crimes, Mukhtar decides to live—and that decision changes the world. Her hope: open a village school for girls to learn to read and write, so that they may avoid the humiliation of signing their names with only a thumbprint. Heartening, and optimistic for the future, this opera is about restorative justice. 

Thumbprint premieres on Portland Opera Onscreen on Thursday, April 20, and will be available to stream on-demand through June 2. Digital passes are $50. 22/23 Season subscribers get discounted passes for $40. Students can unlock passes for $10.

In this centuries-old lyrical folktale with roots in Slavic mythology, a mermaid falls in love with a prince. With the help of the moon and a witch, she defies her father's advice—giving up her home and voice to win the prince's love on dry land. When it doesn't go as planned, the regretful prince seeks redemption, and heartbreak reigns in the land of true love.

Rusalka

The year is 1912, and young Beatrice Morrow is a multi-talented scholar and opera singer, who has always longed to perform. Then she meets and falls in love with Edward Cannady, a community leader and young man who urges Beatrice to take on a new role with The Advocate—the first African American newspaper in Oregon. Beatrice shares her expertise and her voice as a civil rights leader, community organizer, and editor—as she builds bridges and blazes trails in our Portland, Oregon history. 

Commissioned for our Portland Opera to Go Program (POGO), Beatrice is a 50-minute youth opera inspired by the life and story of Beatrice Morrow Cannady, a prominent leader in Oregon’s cultural community and civil rights movement of the early 1900s. The piece has been written for middle school audiences, focused on fourth through ninth grades. This September, POGO will present performances of Beatrice in venues around the region, including two public performances at the Hampton Opera Center.
