Classical Prodigies

Maestro Yaniv Dinur’s program features two Romantic-era warhorses that will knock your socks off! Lili Boulanger’s playful D’un matin de printemps (‘One Spring Morning’) serves as an aperitif for the ravishing First Piano Concerto of Rachmaninoff, performed by the incredible artist Alexander Korsantia, who has won gold medals at the Sydney International Piano Competition, the Palm Beach International Piano Competition, and the Rubinstein Piano Master Competition, to name a few. Tchaikovsky’s supercharged, dramatic Fourth Symphony, which represents the composer’s battle with fate, will round out this spectacular season finale.

The Artelize Podcast and Adolfo Corrado: Mediterranean flavors, opera and social media

Maestro Kellen Gray’s program explores beautiful memories and outdoor delights. Dvořák’s My Home was originally written to accompany a patriotic theatrical production, and for it the composer draws from the song “Where is my Home?,” which today is the Czech national anthem. Similarly, American composer Florence Price’s 1934 piano concerto uses the hymns and spirituals of her youth as the source for her best-known concerto, performed by the internationally-acclaimed Stewart Goodyear, a Tallahassee favorite! Rounding out the program is Beethoven’s gleeful and spirited Fourth Symphony, written at the country estate of his patron Prince Lichnowsky as he enjoyed a daily tonic of outdoor delights—sunshine, warmth, fresh air, and the sounds of nature.

Nostalgia and Nature

The works on Maestro Wesley Schulz’s beautiful program are inspired by the sea and sky. Nielsen’s Helios Overture was written while the composer was on holiday in Athens, and the music poetically depicts the sun over the Aegean Sea. Similarly, the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius wrote his optimistic Second Symphony while vacationing in an Italian coastal village. The touching work provided hope to the Finnish people while they fought against Russian oppression, and it became a symbol of national pride. Torke’s Sky Concerto, nominated for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Music and premiered by Tessa Lark (who also received a Grammy nomination for her recording of the work), is infused with references to Lark’s Kentucky roots and background as bluegrass fiddler. Torke has written, “Just as when one looks up and sees the open expanse of the sky, I felt an openness when writing this piece, a renewed freshness to putting notes together.”

Halloween Symphony Spooktacular!

Maestro Daniel Black’s program promises barn-burning energy! Bookending the concert are Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Montgomery’s work is inspired by the mosaic of dance music found in New York’s various subcultures, from samba to techno, English consort to mbira; Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony–famously referred to as the “apotheosis of the dance” by Richard Wagner–is infused with driving, dance-like rhythms throughout, especially in the outer movements. The symphony culminates in one of the most explosive finales of the entire repertoire. Between these two works, Rachmaninoff’s brooding and virtuosic Third Piano Concerto packs some serious dynamite, especially as performed by rising star pianist Natasha Paremski.

Dancing and Dynamite

Maestro Conner Gray Covington’s season opener reflects his aesthetic of JOY through musical expression. Composer Quinn Mason (b. 1996) wrote A Joyous Trilogy in hopes of creating a piece that is the “very embodiment of happiness and cheerfulness, an accessible work that would put any listener in a good mood.” Following this is Mozart’s exquisite Exsultate Jubilate (‘Exult, Rejoice!’), which the composer wrote at the ripe age of 23, featuring the stunning soprano Amy Owens. Dvořák’s 8th Symphony, known for its bucolic euphoria and the sheer joy of being alive in a world of natural wonders, closes out Covington’s program.

Featuring stellar soloists and iconic works including Pictures at an Exhibition, Lincoln Portrait, Mahler’s Third Symphony, and Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, every concert will be a celebration!

This concert was planned in partnership with the Florida Department of State, the John G. Riley Center & Museum, Soul of Southside, and the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority.

Freedom’s Eve Emancipation Concert

The pieces in this concert connect us to American music and our shared national history. American Herbert and Czeck Dvořák were colleagues at New York’s National Conservatory in the early 1890s and influenced one another as Dvořák sought to grasp the essence of American folk music.

Season Finale: America The Beautiful

Maslanka has written of his 4th Symphony: “The central driving force is the spontaneous rise of the impulse to shout for the joy of life.” This musical celebration will be paired with a brand new commission by Joel Thompson (Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, performed by the TSO in March 2019) that commemorates the historic Tallahassee Bus Boycott. We look forward to, once again, partnering with the FAMU Concert Choir!

Enjoy an evening of Verdi’s greatest hits, with music from Il Travatore, Aida, Nabucco, and La Traviata. An all-star lineup of soloists, joined by FSU’s chorus program, will make this a concert for the ages!
