April Senior Thesis Dance Concert

Join members of the Dance Theatre of Harlem for a fun, accessible introduction to the art of ballet. In this lecture demonstration, the dancers pull back the curtain to reveal how the elements of classical ballet training, choreography, and theatrical production come together to create the magic of a ballet performance. The hour-long program is divided into three sections: a brief history of DTH and the art form of ballet, demonstrations of basic ballet training (barre, women’s pointe work, men’s center work, pirouettes, and lifts) and stagecraft, followed by excerpts from the Dance Theatre of Harlem repertoire.

The Artelize Podcast: A love letter that was never sent

ORIGINS of Hip Hop consists of high-energy, unadulterated street dance movement that will explore and push the boundaries of the origins and roots of street vernacular dances such as Locking, Popping, Hip Hop and Waacking. The performance includes lecture/demonstrations throughout the show that explore the historical context of street dance forms and audience participation sections where students are encouraged to get up out of their seats and dance with the company. Students gain a new perspective on Hip Hop and street dance culture and the impact that arts can have in their communities.

School Performance: Versa-Style Street Dance (KCYS)

In this moving dance performance from acclaimed choreographer (and director) Hope Boykin, a young girl named Clover is told by her mom that it isn't safe to cross the fence that segregates their African-American side of town from the white side where her neighbor Anna lives. But when the two girls become friends, they find a clever way to get around the grown-up rules together.

Clover’s mom says it isn’t safe to cross the fence that segregates their African American side of town from the white side where Anna lives. But the two girls strike up a friendship, and get around the grown-ups’ rules by sitting on top of the fence together. Jacqueline Woodson’s simple yet powerful book The Other Side comes to life in a dance piece from Bessie Award-winning choreographer Hope Boykin. When literal and figurative fences keep us apart, can we find the courage—and creativity—to knock them down?

MOON, the latest work by choreographer Mark Morris, is a captivating exploration of our enduring fascination with the lunar world and how the moon came to be our fall-in-love token, and the mystery and glamour of it.

January Dance will be directed by Assistant Professor Alexandra Barbier who will also be premiering a new characteristically humorous and experimental, theatrical work. MFA candidate, former gymnast, and former David Dorfman Dance Company member Nik Owens premieres his thesis work, an athletic, probing romp into black queerness. Dance at Illinois distinguished alumni guest artists Laina Reese Werner-Powell and Ty Lewis round out this show premiering new group works.

Afrique en Cirque is inspired by daily life in Guinea. Through gravity-defying moves, dance, and human pyramids this performance shares the strength, agility, and life’s joys of young Africans, accompanied by the contemporary sounds of live Afro-Jazz, percussion, and kora. Welcome to the universe of Kalabanté Productions, and prepare for an unforgettable journey.

Champaign Urbana Ballet presents The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky's beloved holiday classic and a treasured Champaign-Urbana tradition. This enchanting production features CU Ballet company dancers and local children in a magical tale of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince, guided by the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer. Audiences of all ages will be captivated by the thrilling battle of mice and soldiers and the dazzling scenes of snow and sweets. Founded in 1998, CU Ballet is known for its professional-quality performances and commitment to training young dancers while enriching the community through the art of ballet.

The Nutcracker

Leslie Cuyjet is a choreographer, dancer, and writer whose performances explore Black embodiment through text, video, and movement. Her solo work has been shown at EMPAC, The Kitchen, The Chocolate Factory, and The Shed. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow, she has also received two Bessie Awards, a Princeton Hodder Fellowship, and support from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Based in Brooklyn, Cuyjet continues to create layered, research-driven work that bridges personal history and postmodern dance.

Cuyjet: For All Your Life

Angie Pittman is a New York-based dancer-choreographer whose work blends movement, sound, and text. Their choreography has been presented at The Kitchen, Gibney Dance, Danspace Project, and The Chocolate Factory Theater, among others. As a performer, they have worked with Larissa Velez-Jackson, Tere O'Connor, and currently with Cynthia Oliver and Ralph Lemon. Pittman is an Assistant Arts Professor at NYU and a 2024-2025 Center for Humanities Fellow developing their latest project, Holy Defiance.

Pittman: Black Life Chord Changes

October Dance features the historic reconstruction of Katherine Dunham's seminal work Afrique, choreographed in 1949. Dunham, who is considered the matriarch of Black Dance, had a career that spanned Broadway, concert stages, opera, TV, and Hollywood films and inspired artists such as Eartha Kitt and Alvin Ailey. This production of a Dunham classic is directed by George A. Miller Visiting Artist April Berry, a certified master teacher of the Dunham Technique and a former principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. In addition, former Hubbard Street dancer and choreographer Rena Butler offers a premiere along with Dance at Illinois resident artists: Dr. Cynthia Oliver performs a spoken word solo, Dr. C. Kemal Nance premieres a work for first-year students, and Associate Professor Roxane D'Orléans Juste performs with her sister, guest artist Sonia D'Orléans Juste.
